unraveling; grasping
Kara Smith’s unraveling; grasping (2024) explores abstracted worlds of isolation and self-avoidance through the relationship between music and dance in real-time. Movement from BFA Dance student Kara Smith and live sound creation from musicians Brendan Callies and Nate Zonnevylle, this trio provides space for art mediums to enhance their awareness of one another in a creative context.

to the bone
Kara Smith’s to the bone (2026) unravels abstraction of bone in relation to oneself and others. This work portrays a journey which spans over ten minutes; tonality shifts through the work which influences the experience within the space. What has changed in the midst, how does one carry on given that it will never be the same as it once was, and yet it prevails? Eight dancers find pathways to make individualized choice within the work, which was developed alongside sound composition by Brendan Callies to find unique influences for each dancer. Within each internal journey, there is a collective push for something beyond. The dancers experience desire from the inside out, holding movement patterning with themes of rigidity, dangling, building, crumbling- working alongside the statuesque. The bones that lie beneath the skin crumble under the weight of one’s own being.
